This was a very special event, a reunion of friends, families, elders and old school friends. Many people met old school friends from 20+ years ago and most importantly the elders of our community got a chance to meet and greet friends and family.

Over 800 members attended the gathering, having travelled long distances from as far as London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leicester, Coventry, Nottingham, Northampton etc.

A message from the Malawi High Commissioner Dr Francis Moto was read. The message conveyed good wishes and good health to Mr Mohanlal Pathak Bapu, formerly of Thyolo who attained a grand age of 100.  Mr Bapu is thought to be the first Malawian Hindu to reach a Centenary. To commemorate the event the Hindu Community presented a wrist watch and crystal plaque to Mr Bapu's family.

On a sad note, the loss of the First Lady Madam Ethel wa Mutharika was announced to the gathering. All members stood up and observed a minutes silence in respect of the departed soul. A message of condolences was conveyed to His Excellency the President of Malawi Dr Bingu wa Mutharika and his family.

In attendance were also members ofthe Malawi Association in Northampton who sang the National Anthem in Chichewa and then performed a traditional Malawian dance.
Girls of the Hindu Community performed a multitude of cultural and Bollywood dances. The girls were all dressed up in colourful costumes.

A slide show was presented depicting the history of Hindus in Malawi. Various contributions of photographs were received from members spanning seventy years or so. The slide show was hailed by all present.

A special note of appreciation must go to the sub-committee in charge of this event, the sub committee was made up from members in Wellingborough, Manchester, Leicester, South & North London etc. An excellent and successful event thanks to the hard work and effort of this special event sub-committee - well done to the team!

Lastly an extra special thank you for all the donors of the event, who helped make this event possible. The list of the donors on the next page.
